I, along with others, have been seeking a solution to this problem for over a year with no resolution. Thankfully, you don't need to uncheck "Use small icons" on the taskbar. This is terrific. Thanks for tip about displaying both the date and time. This is really helpful. Thank you. My ca,endar had the dates in Chinese. Another thing might be if your task bar is in vertical position like mine make sure it is wide enough to display the date as well.
My problem was exactly this so: right click on the Taskbar, uncheck 'lock the taskbar', grab the edge of your taskbar and make it wide enough for date to fit its wider than a time , check the 'lock the taskbar'.
